September Book Club: Ronja

Nordiska’s Book Club

To all of you who are new, velkommen! Nordiska has launched its own book club for fellow Nordic reading enthusiasts to connect and be in community with one another virtually. We invite you to expand your Nordic reading repertoire and discuss a variety of written works with us the last Thursday of each month.

To returners, welcome back! I hope you enjoyed last month’s discussion on the secrets of the sprakkar. For September, and what is back to school for some of us, we will be revisiting children’s literature and exploring fantastical forests with Ronja, the robber’s daughter.

September’s Pick: Ronja

Swedish author Astrid Lindgren is most widely known for her children’s novel Pippi Långstrump/ Pippi Longstocking (1945). A prolific author, Lindgren penned a great many imaginative children’s books during her long career that have been translated into over one hundred different languages and sold more than 165 million copies internationally.

I write fairy tales, and humanity needs fairy tales. That’s how it’s always been and that’s all there is to it.Astrid Lindgren (1981)

Originally published in 1981, Ronja Rövardotter/ Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter is Lindgren’s last published work and highlights her love for the natural world. Set in the Medieval forests of Sweden, Ronja navigates the natural and thinly veiled supernatural world whilst learning valuable skills and making friends with Birk, who just so happens to be part of a rival robbers band.

Ronja’s tale explores our relationships with one another, between parents and children, friends etc. as well as the relationship between humanity and the natural environment.

In a collaboration between the Astrid Lindgren Company and Japan’s Studio Ghibli, Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter became an animated television series in 2014. It has since won several international awards for children’s animation and aired in the US in 2017. Studio Ghibli’s Goro Miyazaki has commented:

Ronja the Robber’s Daughter is a story not just about a girl who grows into adulthood, but it is also a story about the love and growth between a parent and a child, and a story about the bonds between friends. My goal is to create a work that everyone, from children to adults, will be able to enjoy.

Likewise, readers of all ages will love exploring this fantastical world and reflecting on our own relationships with the natural environment and with one another. I look forward to discussing the value of evolving fairytales during our next meeting!
