May Book Club: The Pursuit of Norwegian Happiness

For the Love of Cod: A Father and Son’s Search for Norwegian Happiness by Eric Dregni

Nordiska’s Book Club

To all of you who are new, welcome! Nordiska has just launched its own book club for fellow Nordic reading enthusiasts to connect and be in community with one another virtually during these unique times. We invite you to expand your Nordic reading repertoire and discuss a variety of written works with us over the coming months.

May’s Pick: For the Love of Cod

Author of other works focusing on the Nordic American experience, such as Vikings in the Attic, Eric Dregni is a professor of Journalism, English and Italian at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Like myself, Dregni had the opportunity to live in Norway via the US-Norway Fulbright Foundation, after which he compiled a collection of short stories detailing his experience in, In Cod We Trust: Living the Norwegian Dream.

His latest book publication For the Love of Cod is a comic travelogue that focuses on the intergenerational relationship between Dregni and his son, Eilif, as they explore the concept of Norwegian happiness inquiring, why this Nordic country consistently rates at the top of the World Happiness Report and how does can it translate into other contexts?

The World Happiness 2021 Report

Norway, along with multiple other Nordic countries, consistently rates within the top ten happiest nations internationally according to The World Happiness Report. Even during a global pandemic, Norway ranked eighth in the 2021 report which utilized a variety of data sources to evaluate how different countries have responded to COVID 19 in terms of how successful they were at maintaining connected and healthy societies.

Not only is Norway’s Constitution Day the 17th of May, but also Dregni and his son travel to Norway during the month of May in order to experience the festivals and the beginning’s of the midnight sun. Therefore, this Nordic travelogue represents a perfect pick for this month’s book club as it shall lend itself well to a discussion on contemporary Norway and the Nordic America connection.
